A conservatory is a great way to create more room and add value to your property. It’s also quicker and more cost-effective than a major project to build an extension.
Before you start there are a few things to consider, so here’s our handy guide to designing your new conservatory.
Do You Need Planning Permission?
Generally, the answer is no as conservatories are classified as ‘permitted developments’ under government regulations. Providing it occupies no more than 49% of the surrounding land, is situated at the rear, and isn’t too tall you should be ok.
However, certain caveats do apply. If you’re thinking of a different size and location, or your property is listed, you’ll need planning permission. As experienced conservatory installers, The Window Centre will guide you through the whole process, and we’ll ensure your lovely new conservatory complies with all necessary building regulations as well.
What’s the Best Location?
A north-facing location will be chilly in the colder months so a heating system is a must. Warm flooring and insulated blinds are also a good idea.
A south-facing conservatory catches the sun but this soon becomes hot and stuffy without shade and ventilation. Happily, the right doors, glazing and roof will make your conservatory a lovely place to be throughout the year. We’ll help you chose the best options for your requirements and budget.
How Will You Use Your New Conservatory?
Perhaps you need a playroom for a growing family, a home office, a dining room or just a soothing spot to relax and enjoy the garden all year round? Whatever your priorities, take time to consider furniture, storage units, lighting and floor coverings. With the right accessories, your conservatory will be functional and stylish.
Design and Materials
The possibilities are endless and it’s entirely up to you! For an older house, you may prefer your conservatory in a traditional Edwardian, Victorian or gable style. Alternatively, go for something completely different and opt for a sleek, modern look or a bespoke design.
The building materials are up to you as well. Aluminium and uPVC frames are hard wearing and durable, and they come in a range of colours – perfect for a contemporary look. If you fancy the natural beauty of wood we’ve something for you as well – a versatile choice that suits traditional and modern designs.
Glazing
A large part of your conservatory is glass, and we have many exciting options. Our top-quality performance glass creates a comfortable temperature whatever the weather, and that keeps your heating costs at bay as well. The blue tint reduces glare considerably or, for the very best way to keep this down, have a look at our special bronze tint option.
A Choice of Roofs
The Aspire glass roof system lets in plenty of light and comes in many colours and smart designs. This range also provides excellent thermal and sound insulation, and that’s always a good thing.
A guardian warm roof is another option, and this is capped with tiles or shingles. It’ll keep the glare off and your conservatory cool in summer and keep everything cosy in winter due to its exceptional insulation properties.
Doors
Bifold doors will open up an entire section of the conservatory to instantly make everything feel more spacious and bring the outside in. If you prefer a more traditional look you can opt for sliding patio doors or French doors.
