Are you thinking about replacing your windows or doors? Have you been told you’ll need trickle vents? Do you have any idea what they are, if you actually need them, and why?
In this post, we look at what a trickle vent is and why you may need them on your new windows. We also uncover some of their benefits.
What Is a Trickle Vent?
A trickle vent is the horizontal covered opening that usually sits at the top of a window frame. Its job is to let fresh air ‘trickle’ in and move stale air out of your home without having to open the window. Most trickle vents are adjustable and work by opening or closing the cover on the vent.
Why Do I Need Trickle Vents?
At first glance, it seems strange to need a ventilation system for a ventilation system. Windows are now so efficient and airtight that the vents are required to solve a new problem; without them, air cannot circulate properly within the home.
Do I Have to Have Trickle Vents?
This will depend on several factors, but the most likely answer is yes. This is due to building regulations.
In most cases, trickle vents are required. For example, in a new build or if you are replacing a window that already has a trickle vent.
There are situations where trickle vents are not mandatory, such as in some listed buildings. Your local FENSAapproved window installer will be able to advise you.
What Are the Benefits of Having a Trickle Vent?
- The environment: Advances in technology mean that new window units are airtight once installed. This helps the environment by significantly reducing the heat lost from our homes. Trickle vents circulate air throughout our homes with much less environmental impact than the old, breezy windows of the past.
- The health of our homes: Homes need to breathe, and this means circulating fresh air. Trickle vents reduce the moisture levels in our homes and protect them from related damage.
- Our health: We need good ventilation to reduce the build-up of indoor allergens, moisture, and pollutants that can harm our health. Condensation and a build-up of volatile organic compounds (VOC) from furniture and carpets can cause lung problems. If used continuously, trickle vents will give us a good air quality that will help protect our health when we cannot open a window.
- Practicality: Many of us like to open our windows when we can, but it is not always practical. A cold, stormy day has most of us hunkering down, and opening a window is just not possible. Trickle vents can give us the fresh air we need without letting in the bad weather.
- Security: An open window can be irresistible to an opportunistic burglar, especially if it is on the ground floor. Having a trickle vent means you can ventilate your home without compromising your security, even if you are away.
- Cost: It may seem like a waste of money having trickle vents when you can open the windows daily. Still they along with the right choice of window can reduce your heating bills by reducing heat loss.
